ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUES (ART)

ART (Assisted reproductive techniques) offers new hope to infertile couples who may have been considered the problem of infertility untreatable, or for those who have actually not responded to traditional medical treatment. It involves manipulation of sperm and ova in vitro and vivo with the goal of getting pregnant.

To elaborate further, ART refers to various procedures and techniques that involve the laboratory handling of human oocytes (or in simple words eggs), human sperm, and/or embryos collectively.  The treatment for Infertility is evolving rapidly now, more than ever before , with the latest technologies.

Male factor infertility may be described as any condition in which the man adversely affects the chances of a couple achieving a pregnancy. Generally, male factor infertility is described in terms of ASTHENOSPERMIA  (i.e. impaired sperm motility), TERATOSPERMIA (i.e. abnormal sperm morphology) or OLIGOSPERMIA (i.e. abnormal sperm concentration). Oligospermia is actually the presence of less than 20 million sperm per cc. in a semen specimen. Additionally impaired sperm motility and impaired sperm morphology are also associated with impaired Fertility.

According to WHO criteria, impaired sperm motility is sperm motility less than 50 percent and impaired sperm morphology means normal sperms less than 30 percent. Furthermore, impaired sperm morphology is less than 14 percent according to Kruger strict criteria. In addition to men with abnormal sperm production, male factor infertility also describes men with normal sperm production but mechanical problems with sperm transport to the vagina during intercourse. When during evaluation of a couple for infertility a male factor is found, an entire evaluation of the man is warranted. If conditions causing the male factor are actually found to be treatable, they ought to be corrected right away. If treatment is not successful, or if the couple still does not conceive, then assisted reproduction is indicated.

Female factor infertility may be described as irregular or delayed menstrual cycle, PCOD, Ovulation failure, blocked Fallopian tubes, structural defects of reproductive system, implantation failure, fibroids in uterus etc. After proper diagnosis and finding the cause if it is treatable by medicine or surgery, it is corrected but if there is no response of treatment than we take help of various ART.
