ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION: TREATMENTS AND CAUSES

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is  a condition in which male is unable to attain as well as sustain an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is also referred as Impotence.

Erectile Dysfunction can affect the quality of life of a man, causing stress, relationship troubles and above all low self-esteem. Though Erectile Dysfunction is not an age related problem and it can affect men of any age, It becomes  more common after middle age. Sometimes Erectile Dysfunction may be a sign of some other underlying health issue such as vascular disease, Diabetes, Hypertension etc.

WHAT CAUSES ERECTION

Penile erection in males  results from a complicated interaction between physical, neural as well as vascular systems. Furthermore, the erection is produced because of an increased blood flow to the penis, which is generally stimulated by direct physical contact or sexual interest. As a male becomes sexually excited, the muscles in the penis relax and this further allows an increased blood flow through the penile arteries. The blood fills in the two chambers of the penis known as the corpora cavernosa. As a result the penis grows rigid and erect. The erection flaccates (ends) when the muscles in the penis contract and the accumulated blood actually flows out of the chambers via the veins.

Erectile dysfunction can occur due to a number of factors, including health issues, emotional stress and other psychological conditions.

PHYSICAL CAUSES OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

  • VASCULAR PROBLEMS

When the blood supply to the penis is reduced or blocked as a result of heart and vascular diseases like the atherosclerosis (hardened arteries), diabetes etc it  causes Erectile Dysfunction.

  • NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS

In Neurogenic disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, an injury, Stroke, or Diabetes nerve signals do not reach the penis, which lead to the development of Erectile Dysfunction.

  • TRAUMA

An injury can also cause symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction.

  • OTHER CONDITIONS

Chronic illnesses, surgery for prostate, Peyronie’s disease (which happens because of the   development of scar tissue inside the penis), bladder or colon cancer may also cause Erectile Dysfunction. Priapism which is a condition that causes prolonged as well as painful erection may cause damage to the erectile tissue of the penis, which further results in Erectile Dysfunction.

  • KIDNEY FAILURE

Kidney failure can also lead to erectile dysfunction in men

  • ALCOHOLISM AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Extensive use of illicit drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and others may also contribute to Erectile Dysfunction.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Male sexual arousal is a complex process and  brain plays an important role in triggering a series of physical reactions in the body that lead to an erection or we can say any sexual stimulation starts from the brain. Hence for a good erection a person’s brain should be relaxed and calm. A number of factors can impede with sexual feelings, causing or contributing to Erectile Dysfunction. These include mental problems like depression, stress, fatigue , any kind of illness . Even performance anxiety may cause Erectile Dysfunction many times.

MEDICATIONS THAT CAN CAUSE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Erectile Dysfunction is one of the common side effects of many prescription drugs. These medicines can affect production/functioning of male hormones, nerves system or blood circulation which further results in Erectile Dysfunction or an increased risk of Erectile Dysfunction. Some of the such medicines that may lead to Erectile Dysfunction as a potential side effect are listed below:

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Method to treat Erectile Dysfunction is determined by the doctor after analyzing the cause and severity of Erectile Dysfunction. MECHANICAL DEVICES: PENILE PUMPS

If we talk about devices that can serve as aids for erection for some men, the devices that come to mind are penis pump (vacuum erection device) and penile constriction rings.

  • The penile pump is nothing but a hollow cylindrical tube with a pump powered by hand or a battery. The tube is  placed over the penis, and then air is pumped out of the tube.
  • This further creates a vacuum that draws blood into the penis and  causes an erection. After this, a tension ring is placed around the base of the penis in order to hold in the blood and thus maintain firmness.
  • After this the vacuum device is then removed.
  • The band can usually stay at the base for about a period of 30 minutes, which is long enough for a couple to have sex.

SURGICAL INTERVENTION

PENILE IMPLANTS

Penile prosthesis is surgically implanted into the penis. These prosthetic implants can be either inflatable or malleable rods. The implants allow a man to have an erection whenever he desires while preserving the sensation, orgasm as well as ejaculation in most cases.

The inflatable devices are more commonly used penile implants these days. These devices contain a pair of inflatable cylinders that are placed in the erection chambers during an operation with a fluid reservoir and a pump in the scrotal sac. To obtain an erection, a male compresses the pump to transfer the fluid from reservoir to implanted cylinders. This allows men to achieve an erection very similar to the natural one and implant is hardly noticeable externally. A deflation valve that is attached to the pump is pressed to return the penis to flaccid state by channeling the fluid back to the reservoir.

As with any surgery, there’s risk of complications with penile implant surgery also. However, complications after penile implant surgery aren’t common, and mostly include infection and device failure. It is estimated that about 95% of penile implant surgeries end in producing satisfactory erections in men.
